Bay and Davenport intersection issues
Concerning the updated bicycle markings at the Bay/Davenport intersection:
Lining up the bicycles to the right of a right-turn only lane when turning from Bay onto Davenport seems particularly dangerous. I have been successfully lining up to the right of cars in the left-turn lane, but this does pose a danger if a bus comes up in the right-turn lane, since they are allowed to turn left from there, placing the bicycle in a precarious position. Thankfully, there is a 2- or 3-second delay on the lights allowing an alert bicyclist to get a head start on traffic and get away from it all, but this involves breaking the law (which I might already be breaking by lining up in the left lane instead of the bike lane?). To me, this seems like a logical intersection for an advanced stop line for bicyclists and a dedicated bicycle/pedestrian phase for the lights. In its current set-up, the intersection seems like a disaster waiting to happen.
I posted some time ago on this issue on reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/torontobiking/comments/1sp1ze/bay_and_davenport_...), but I wanted to bring it to the attention of a wider audience now that I have seen some confusion at this intersection on the part of cyclists and drivers, and the fact that my solution consists of going through a red light, which I'd prefer not to have to do. Is there anything that can be done to fix this problem?
