ARGYLE WALK and ward check in. ONE WEEK NOTICE -ish

Submitted by Bike Mark on 7 March, 2013 - 19:48

when: March 13th 2013, 5:30 pm

where: Trinity Bellwoods Rec Centre, 155 Crawford St, front doors (faceing Crawford).  Look for me, Mark, I'll have a funny hat on and Cycle Toronto sign.

why: The ward 18 group has been asked by the City and Councilor Bailao to submit ideas and comments for the forthcoming Argyle countraflow bike way.  We'll walk, talk and observe Argyle from Shaw to Gladstone Ave.

It's down on the books, but it's still a ways from implimentation.  We need to figure out some design constraints and garner community support.

how long: the walk will be between 30 minutes to an hour, then we will have a short ward check-in at the West End Food Co-op, in the Parkdale Community Health Centre, 1229 Queen West.

what to bring: Ideas! and warm clothes.

#1 Hi, good meeting you guys

Submitted by benjhellie on 14 March, 2013 - 01:05.

Hi, good meeting you guys today. I blogged some (totally flatfooted) thoughts over here: http://ossingtoncommunity.wordpress.com/2013/03/14/west-end-bikeway-system-vs-area-2/

Can anyone explain to me how this is all supposed to work?

See you next week

#3 "Traffic sewer"? The OCA

Submitted by herb on 14 March, 2013 - 09:55.

"Traffic sewer"?

The OCA could have focused their fight on a reduction in parking for the mid-rise proposed for Ossington and I'd be on board. I bet even the developers would be happy to put in less parking that might not sell. But to imply that the only way we can have bike friendly streets is to support low-rise is dishonest. I've skimmed through your material and have seen little to nothing to prove your point. No traffic studies or examples. You've done little to prove your point yet there are counter examples (such as Amsterdam) that have mid-rise buildings but is about as bike friendly as you can get. And there are examples of high-rises in Toronto that are being built with no parking at all.

You haven't even shown how the approved mid-rise with 70 parking spots will make Argyle "dangerous" (to use a totally subjective term).

I'm all for making Argyle bike-friendly, but scare-mongering only serves to make Cycle Toronto look bad.

#4 Thanks to Herb for starting

Submitted by benjhellie on 14 March, 2013 - 11:36.

Thanks to Herb for starting this discussion.

First off, my posting is not about the existing midrise application.

Rather, it is directed at the Draft Area Study for Ossington, which preserves lowrise on 7/8 of Ossington but directs midrise to "Area 2" -- which would mean 250--300 parking spots and truck servicing for 400 residents and 3000m^2 of chain retail.

The affected laneway feeds out to Argyle St, which is 6m wide on that segment: already 1m below the regulation width for parking + traffic + contraflow.

That is where the Argyle-Robinson Bikeway goes.

I don't see how that is supposed to work.

When we talked with the city planners working on that Area Study, they were unaware that the Argyle-Robinson Bikeway existed. They hadn't considered the prospect of how it is supposed to work.

The OCA brought the issue of the interaction between the A-RBw and Area 2 to the attention of City Planning. In the interim, even though we have asked about this interaction on a number of occasions, City Planning has not filled us in on their thoughts on this matter. I still don't see how it is supposed to work.

Those who are interested in the Argyle-Robinson Bikeway have a right to answers to these questions. I think they should be asked.

I think people reading this should ask these questions. The head planner for our area is Lynda Macdonald: lmacdon1@toronto.ca. Write her and ask them.
